EuroMaint Rail and ÅF Kontroll in important technical partnership

ÅF Kontroll, on behalf of EuroMaint Rail, has developed a mechanical testing system to check axletrees for cracks.

Thanks to the new testing equipment, lead times for maintenance work can be cut and safety when measuring important components can be improved. The testing system is now being used for the first time on SJ’s new axletrees for X2 rolling stock.

The new testing system is based on technology developed by ÅF Kontroll for nuclear power plants, among others. Thanks to the partnership with EuroMaint Rail, it has been possible to adapt the system for ultrasonic inspections of drilled axletrees for rolling stock. Checks for cracks were previously carried out manually in connection with traffic maintenance. The new testing system mechanises the checks, which allows a safer, more sensitive measurement, improved analysis options and increased traceability.

“This new technology means reduced testing costs, shorter lead times in the workshop and increased safety and traceability for our customers. The technical partnership with ÅF Kontroll is a good example of how we meet the demands of our customers and consciously work to increase the availability and reliability of their rolling stock,” comments Mats Önner, CEO of EuroMaint Rail.

The new testing system means that checks only need to be carried out in connection with planned component maintenance. For EuroMaint Rail’s maintenance personnel, the new system means they can avoid monotonous work tasks and instead focus on technical analyses and the development of rolling stock maintenance. The testing of axletrees will take place at EuroMaint Rail’s component workshop in Örebro. ÅF Kontroll will support EuroMaint Rail in the use and further development of the new equipment.

“The new testing equipment for checking for cracks in axletrees is the result of a closer, focused partnership that is characterised by ever increasing technical content and a commercial focus. We see great opportunities in working with EuroMaint Rail to develop new technical solutions that streamline and improve the maintenance of rolling stock,” says Sven Hamrén, Business Area Manager for ÅF Kontroll.
